I saw a quote on LinkedIn the other day. You know the type of thing. A stylized quote in a picture. No context or explanation. Just put out there. And it had a huge number of views and likes.

It had nothing to do with weight (or so I thought, initially):

“People don’t leave jobs. They leave toxic work cultures.”

Some people were dismissing it as meaningless faux instagram philosophy, but for others, like me, it resonated. I could relate.

I have twice left organizations when the culture, leadership and lack of values on display have been so bad that I’ve voted with my feet.

The basic essence of the quote is this — if a situation is bad, take action. Either try to change the situation, or remove yourself from it.

But the quote hit me personally much harder in regard to another issue in my life — my weight. That’s because with weight, you can’t just “leave”. You have to eat, every day. You can’t “walk out” on the basic physical functions of your body.

And if you can’t leave, then you have to make change happen.
