Can You Answer The Question “What Are Your Values?”

If not, have a think

When I applied for a leadership role at a company (having worked for years at a lower level in another one) I had to give a presentation, and spell out how I would make a difference.

I considered myself a reasonable and fair person, but beyond that, I couldn’t name what I stood for. So I thought about it. And boiled it down to two words:

  • Honesty
  • Positivity

That’s what I promised to be in my presentation, that’s what I told my team on Day 1 of me taking over. And in any situation, if I didn’t know what to do I would go back to those two values. I would be honest and positive.

At times it was tough, but everyone knew what I stood for. These things are worth thinking about. They make you, you.
