It’s No Good Just Telling People They Are Important To You
Show them with what you do
According to this ethics blog, French writer Michel de Montaigne (1533–1592) said “Saying is one thing and doing is another”. Nearly 500 years later, his thinking has evolved into this timeless maxim:
“Actions speak louder than words”
A big thing is turning up. If you say your friends are important to you, then show it by making the effort to be with them. It takes a few seconds to send a WhatsApp, perhaps a few minutes if you choose your words carefully.
But to prioritise, diarise, say “No” to things that come up after you’ve committed, to plan, to shop, to travel, to adapt, to go for it, to take part… these all take time and effort.
It all says “You are important to me” far more than words on a screen.
