Management Is The Least Efficient Thing You Can Do At Work

Help, or get out of the way

I’ve worked for some awful managers in my time. Political, vindictive, lazy, out-of-touch, unhelpful, clueless, patronising — I could go on.

Management meant “finally leaving behind the underpaid hordes who do the work and making it to the promised land where you get paid more to do less”. I saw colleague after colleague move up the ladder promising to “change things” and soon end up just like the rest of them.

As a manager you must be seen to be doing something. The perfect manager does themselves out of a job because their team is so motivated, happy and productive that they’re not needed. So managers find ways to meddle, claim credit, obstruct or criticise just for the sake of it.

The best thing about being a solopreneur? No manager.
