Re-defining Resilience
Resilience is a buzz word. The problem with buzz words is that as their usage increases, their meaning can get warped. There’s something about a word (particulaly a behavioural one) becoming popular that makes it feel like it should be acheivable, everyone is doing it, and it’s easy and instant to find.
Being resilient is about maintaining a baseline of toughness over a long period of time. I don’t think you can switch it on and off.
“Ooh look, I’m being resilient now. Go me.”
There’s few of us who would say we are resilient, to ourselves, or others. It’s quite an arrogant stance to take. But take a look back over the last few years of your life. Challenging things will have happened. And you’re still here. You’re still not perfect, but you’re still trying.
You are more resilient than you think.
