The truth of how good you are is somewhere in between the harsh things you tell yourself in your head… and the over-reaching self-glorifying corporate nonsense people write on LinkedIn.

You’re somewhere in the middle.

But, crucially, that’s closer to being successful than you may think. Because in order to do well, you don’t need everything to go well. Not even close.

You just need a few things to go well. Every once in a while.

Let me explain…

One Good Thing

I was watching my kid do their soccer training the other evening and chatting to one of the other parents. We were discussing how the team were really coming on and starting to play some nice stuff.

I mentioned how I’d noticed that in rugby — another sport my kids play — I’d observed that it only took one player to do something well and the rest of them followed suit.

The parent I was talking to — who in their teens played high level representative sport — said this:

“Our coach used to say this to us — if one of you can do one good thing every 5 minutes, we’ll win…
