The Basics Of Friendship Don’t Change

Even if everything else does

Seasons of life change people. Partners, locations, jobs, kids, health, finances — all can cause profound differences in the context of your friendship. They may have a huge affect.

Becoming friends often springs from a shared experience or outlook, once that is changed or removed, the relationship can falter.

But, the basics of how to make a friendship work do not change. Contact, communication, helping each other, listening, sharing, giving, taking, having a laugh and enjoying each other’s company.

If you can keep doing all those things — however the context changes — then that’s when a friendship lasts.

You may feel your friend is not quite the “same old” guy/girl you got to know way back. Guess what? Neither are you. But you two have something extra now. History.

Nurture your friendships and they will look after you.
