The Golden Rule Every Solopreneur Must Follow

Even when it’s tough and especially when it’s good

Time flies when you’re having fun… or running a business of 1 person. I set up my company (I say company, it’s just me) just over 2 years ago. That’s what the calendar says.

In my mind it feels like about 6 months.

When I started out, I had a cast-iron appreciation of “the golden rule”. In fact, it was the very reason I made the decision to leave corporate culture and strike out on my own.

But I have to be honest, I’ve lost track of it at times in the last 20-odd months. And that’s because it’s one of those slippery things — the more you try to hold onto it, the more risk there is of it slipping from your grasp.

It reminds me of a time earlier in my career, when I tried way too hard to become what I thought I needed to be and lost sight of something important along the way…

Fighting Fire With Fire

At a company I used to work for, I had a vision that things could be done differently and there was an untapped area of huge potential we should be active in.

The big bosses weren’t really interested but they let me develop it in my own time additional to my usual work.
