The Incredible Power Of Admitting You Are Wrong
I was always defensive as a child, hopefully I’m a little better as an adult. I’m guessing (note to self — research for bigger article)… it has something to do with ancient survival instincts. Sensing threat is important.
Now we don’t have wild animals trying to eat us, but we do face a new foe — judgement. Right now it’s hard to maintain a “live and let live” mindset. We get drawn in to pronouncing other people and their behaviour right or wrong, and they do the same to us.
If we err — digging in, pulling on increasingly bizarre justifications, just amps up the anger on the other side.
The alternative — putting our hands up and saying “OK, I got it wrong, lesson learned, sorry”… it’s so powerful.
Like a drop of detergent on greasy water, the tension dissipates and calm is restored.
