Try Turning Your Phone Off. Actually Off.

It’s harder, and better, than you imagine

We all know we spend too much time on our phones. Yes, yes, we get it, yada yada yada. But none of use do anything about it. It’s a problem for other people:

“I’m glad I’m not one of those people totally addicted to their phones. Imagine that!”

Except we are all hopelessly addicted. We don’t notice it, or the downsides, until we stop and turn the thing off. Not on silent, or airplane, or urgent notifications only (or alarms).

Off.

I turned my phone off at 7pm last night because I wanted to avoid a sports result. It’s been off for 14 hours now. It’s been amazing, a relief, a revelation even.

First step — stop taking your phone to bed, your sleep will improve. Next, experiment with turning it off, and watch what happens.
